The goal of the project is to create a world-class laboratory in the field of photoacoustic (PA) technologies with a focus on biomedical photoacoustics for the development of revolutionary approaches in diagnosis and therapy (such integration is termed theranostics) of circulating pathological cells that are early markers or precursors of fatal diseases such as tumor metastases, strokes and infectious sepsis (in Russia such studies are not conducted yet).

Scientific work of the leading scientist, his/her main scientific achievements:
Prof. Zharov is the world-recognized leader in photoacoustics (PA) and nanomedicine. He pioneered in vivo blood test and in vivo theranostics of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and bacteria using PA flow cytometry and photothermal (PT) effects, which has been successfully used in clinical trials. He developed nonlinear PA spectroscopy and super-resolution microscopy; pioneered in 2002 application of nanotechnology for killing cancer cells and bacteria using laser-induced nanobubbles; and discovered ultrasharp PA resonances in plasmonics named after him “Zharov Splitting.” He also developed novel anticancer PT- nanodrug; and introduced spasers as supercontrast biomarkers. Zharov received unique education at elite Russian (BMSTU and MSU) and American (Berkeley) universities/
